Despacito is a 2017 song released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It was the single that became the most popular streamed song worldwide within just the space of six months. The single Despacito, a mixture of reggaeton with pop music, not only brought new focus to reggaeton, but also increased interest in Latin music. In 2015 there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017, however, 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it to the top 100 In 2020, there were 41 songs. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with an English version in the year 2017. In the year following, famous artists started working together with reggaeton groups. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018) and Madonna was a part of Medellin along with Maluma (2019). Certain reggaeton performers lamented the trend towards mainstream music in 2020. However, a brand new band, Rauw Alejandro, wanted to continue the growth and evolution of reggaeton. It was often associated with electronic dance as well as different forms.
